Metadata Specialist, Naper Settlement, Naperville, Illinois

Part time, Temporary or Term: 20 hours per week (flexible within a M-F 8:30am-4pm work day), working hours onsite through December 31, 2026 with a renewable option for up to two years

Salary: $25 per hour, paid monthly

Naperville Historical Society at Naper Settlement is seeking to contract with a qualified Metadata Specialist to research and create metadata in support of our Whole History Project. Reporting to the Chief Curator, the Metadata Specialist will possess knowledge of archival standards for metadata. The work will take place at our Fort Hill Collections and Care Center in Naperville. Works in coordination and cooperation with the Scanning Technicians, Digital Archivist, and other staff as needed.

Contract position will do the following:

• Research archival materials to determine their origins.

• Create and apply appropriate original descriptive metadata to the systems. (Standards: EAD, Dublin Core, MODS, METS, PREMIS).

• Follow established workflows and storage procedures to backup digital content and performs activities in support of controlled vocabularies (such as Getty vocabularies and Nomenclature 4.0) and entity management workflows.

• Ingest digital files and their metadata into digital preservation software. (Metadata++ and digital preservation software Preservica.)

• Ensure that collection material is physically prepped and archival standards are followed for the proper care and handling of physical archival material.

• Verify proper documentation, metadata, and storage procedures are followed, in accordance with nationally accepted standards

Required: Bachelor’s degree
