Almost 200 years ago, in 1819, Illinois passed the first of the Black Laws which denied African Americans basic rights. Chicagoans fought these laws and helped enslaved persons attain freedom through the Underground Railroad.

Join archivist Beth Loch to learn about the infamous Black Laws and view archival manuscripts depicting life for African Americans in the mid-1800s.
