About the tour

CAA invites you to join your fellow archivists, librarians, and records managers for a tour of the Fermilab Archives.

Located in Batavia, Ill., Fermilab is America’s premier laboratory for particle physics and

accelerator research. Founded in 1967, Fermilab is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year by sharing its history of discovery, innovation, and groundbreaking contributions to the understanding of how the universe works.

CAA member Valerie Higgins has served as archivist and historian at Fermilab since 2012. On this tour, she will take us through Fermilab’s two archives locations as well as other areas of interest, such as Fermilab’s linear accelerator and main control room. In addition, visitors can come early or stay late to explore areas of the lab that are open to the public, such as the Lederman Science Education Center or the native prairie restoration and buffalo herd.

Registration

Registration for this event is required.

Due to space limitations, this is a CAA members-only event (limit 17). Not a member? Joining CAA is quick and easy!

The CAA Events Subcommittee uses RSVPs to measure attendance, and, in the event of low response, might postpone or cancel an event. As a result, please RSVP only if you are certain you can attend. If you RSVP but are unable to attend, please provide at least 24-hours notice.

New for this tour: Rideshare!

Because this tour is so far outside of our typical “tour zone,” CAA has developed a rideshare spreadsheet to help make this tour more accessible. View the spreadsheet if you have extra seats to share or are looking for a ride. Drivers and riders are responsible for coordinating pick up locations, times, etc. CAA is providing this spreadsheet as a resource, but is not responsible for coordinating travel.

Driving/parking instructions

You can enter Fermilab from the East Gate (Batavia Rd.) or the West Gate (Pine Street). At the gate, you will be asked to show a photo ID (any U.S.- or state-issued photo ID will work). You can tell them you are coming onsite for an archives tour with Valerie Higgins at Wilson Hall. You will then drive to Wilson Hall (it’s easy to spot—it’s the only high-rise building on site). You can park in the large lot next to the building, which will be on the right as you approach the building.

Click here for more information on Fermilab site access.

Additional information

Attendees may arrive about 15 minutes before the 2 p.m. start time. Valerie will meet everyone in the atrium of Wilson Hall. The atrium is on the first floor of the building, which is above the ground floor and the mezzanine floor. You can call or text Michael San Filippo at 847-732-6194 if you’re having trouble finding your way.

Can’t make it to this event? Don’t worry – there will be more events and activities throughout the year at a variety of dates, times, and locations. Coming soon:

·         Day of Service at Pullman State Historic Site: Saturday, May 20, 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
