The next installment of CAA Reacts will focus on ethical cataloging. Join us on September 10 from 6-8 p.m. at Beermiscuous (2812 N Lincoln Ave, Chicago, IL 60657for a discussion on ethical cataloging projects, facilitated by Gretchen Neidhardt, Cataloging and Metadata Librarian at the Chicago History Museum, with Josh Honn, Digital Humanities Librarian at Northwestern University.

We welcome any discussion about potential, current, or completed projects about strategic and critical metadata changes made to address harmful language in item descriptions (racist, classist, colonialist, etc.).

At CHM, Gretchen is involved in the (very) early stages of planning a sustainable and comprehensive critical cataloging project, both to address harmful language but also to have a more strategic approach to creating representation in metadata for Chicagoland people, places, and events, particularly minority voices not well represented by LOC. Josh will join us to talk about his work with the Native American Educational Services College Digital Library Project. Other relevant projects include Archives for Black Lives in Philadelphia, the work of Ann Doyle and others at the Xwi7xwa Library, and Kelly Bolding’s XQuery work.

This event is free and all are welcome (members or non-members), but due to space limitations, we are limited to 20 registrants.

If you are interested in more follow up or potential collaboration, please email Gretchen at neidhardt@chicagohistory.org.
