Description

Having problems with EAD/XML? Want to learn more? This workshop will cover XML and EAD basics as well as provide attendees with the opportunity troubleshoot their finding aids and get answers to pressing questions.

Who Should Attend?

Archivists and others who are charged with exploring and/or implementing EAD at their institution or who want to enhance their resumé

Attendees should bring

  • Laptops with XML editors. If you are unable to bring a laptop, but still need assistance, it can be emailed to the host Allison Schein at allison@creativeaudioarchive.org
  • Problematic finding aids. 

Presenter: Karen Miller

Karen Miller is a Monographic Cataloger/Metadata Specialist at Northwestern University Library, where she has worked since 2003. Her job duties are split between cataloging monographs, posters, and maps in MARC, and working with metadata in XML. She is the chair of the library’s Archival Collections Management System executive team, which is responsible for the administration and use of the various bits and pieces of technology used to make discoverable archival collection descriptions. She has created EAD finding aids using various XML editors and with the Archon system. Her responsibilities include monitoring the application of controlled vocabularies in the library’s finding aid collection as well as creating and wrangling XML in a variety of formats. She holds an MLIS from Dominican University, an MS, Statistics from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, and a BA in Mathematics from University of Michigan.
