Special Collections Digital Specialist

The Oak Park Public Library is seeking a part-time Digital Specialist to join our Special Collections team.


The Oak Park Public Library’s Special Collections curates, protects, and makes available heritage collections that reflect the unique values and enduring legacies of Oak Park and its inhabitants. Collecting emphasis is on local authors and figures—including Edgar Rice Burroughs, Ernest Hemingway, Percy Julian, Carol Shields, Frank Lloyd Wright, Harriette Gillem Robinet, and Philander Barclay. The Digital Specialist supports Special Collections in making collections available to the public.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Maintain the library’s Special Collections digital collections. 
  • Digitize items on demand for researchers and as part of Special Collections projects
  • Assist the Archivist in standardizing workflows 
  • Create metadata for digital objects based on archival standards, such as DACS
  • Communicate with vendors and partners to coordinate content uploads
  • Execute migration and legacy data projects of born digital and digitized objects
  • Organize Special Collections drives and assess digital collections 
  • Collaborates on other Special Collections digital projects with partner organizations

Required Qualifications

  • Ability to learn on the job and attention to detail
  • Demonstrated knowledge of archival metadata schemas (ie. DACS, DublinCore)
  • Knowledge of archival content management systems (ie. CONTENTdm, ArchivesSpace)
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and collaboratively as part of a team

Education and Experience

  • Master's Degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited school with relevant graduate-level coursework in digital humanities, archival science, public history, or related field.
  • At least one year of work experience with metadata
  • At least one year of experience in archives or special collections (includes volunteer and internship experience)
  • Public library or reference experience preferred

Additional Details

This position is part-time with a flexible January 2020 start date. The scheduled hours are 20 daytime hours Monday through Friday with occasional evening and weekend hours. The position includes paid time-off (vacation, sick time, floating and paid holidays), and enrollment in the IMRF retirement pension plan. The hourly rate: $20.00 to $24.00, depending on qualifications. Candidates may also be asked to undergo a background check. Applications will be accepted through Sunday, December 15, 2019.
