Archivist Intern - Part-Time

Winnetka Public Schools District 36


The District is seeking a part-time student archivist to assist with organizing the archives of District 36, founded in 1859.  The Winnetka Public Schools are internationally recognized for their Progressive Education philosophy, which began in 1919 with the arrival of Superintendent Carleton Washburne.  

The holdings include the Washburne Memorial Library, personal documents from the Washburne family, educational materials created by the district from 1920-present, directories, images, architectural documents relating to the six school buildings.  There is also an extensive archive on Crow Island School, a National Register and National Historic Landmark building designed by Eero and Eliel Saarinen and Larry Perkins in 1940.  Crow Island is recognized internationally for its architectural significance.

An intern would:

  • Sort through documentation and organize by subject and location
  • Scan documents that are deemed significant
  • Enter into Past Perfect
  • Identify storage rerquirements for fragile items
  • Cull and process duplication in existing processed archives


  • Experience in processing archives preferred
  • Excellent communication, word processing, and data management skills
  • Ability to input data into a collections management system
  • Ability to lift and reorganize boxes
  • Ability to work independently


  • 5-10 hours weekly is expected over the summer hours.  Work would be overseen by volunteers with extensive knowledge of the archives.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS  Moderate degree of physical stamina with occasional lifting of 10 to 20 pounds.  Ability to move freely to various locations within office and school settings.  Frequent standing, walking, sitting, and bending.  Frequent repetitive activities including hands, arms, and legs for clerical related work.

This is an unpaid internship; stipend is available.
