CAA Archives Salon Spring 2014

Chicago Area Archivists invites CAA members and interested others to attend this spring’s Archives Salon, an informal discussion on a topic of interest to archivists, historians, librarians, and records managers.

When: Tuesday, April 29, 6:30-8:00

Where: Efebina's Café 1640 S Blue Island Ave, Chicago

There is no entrance fee to this event, but Efebina's kindly requests that all attendees make a minimum purchase of $3.50.

This Archives Salon will center on the recent article "A Critique of Social Justice as an Archival Imperative: What Is It We're Doing That's All That Important?" (The American Archivist, Vol. 76, No. 2, Fall/Winter 2013: 302-334) by Mark A. Greene and the response "Archivists and Social Responsibility: A Response to Mark Greene" by Randall C. Jimerson (The American Archivist, Vol. 76, No. 2, Fall/Winter 2013: 335-345).

Abstract

In recent years, a new and provocative thesis has been presented to the archival profession, to wit: to be an ethical archivist, one must pursue "social justice" in all phases of archival practice. While a professional agenda of social justice encompasses the more familiar ideology of "activist archivist," it stretches much further and has much more profound consequences for our profession. This article challenges both the philosophy and utility of social justice as the end of archival effort, and proposes an alternative goal for the profession.

Join your colleagues for an open-ended, unmoderated discussion. Come having read the article and be prepared to share your thoughts, listen to those of your colleagues, and respond.
